No cabe duda de que “Ciudad de Dios” se va a convertir para los inquietos y los rastrea-dores de piezas preciosas cinematográficas en la película más sorprendente, excitante y libre . Lo primero que va a llamar la atención a cualquier espectador que se acerque a este desgarrador film es lo eléctrico, frenético y desgarrado de su realización, en la que se pue-den encontrar rastros de Peckinpah, Scorsese o las primeras vanguardias del cine ruso, pero que sobre todo conserva una iden-tidad y originalidad que le es propia y que deja fascinada a la audiencia (com-probado). Pero eso no es todo. Porque este film dirigido por Fernando Meire-lles con la ayuda de Katia Lund y con la producción de un hombre tan impor-tante para el cine de Brasil como es Walter Salles (el artífice de “Estación central de Brasil”), puede considerarse una auténtica creación global en donde cada elemento brilla con luz propia dentro de un conjunto en el que todo está perfectamente ensamblado. El guión (un portento de adapta-ción de una complicadísima novela de 600 páginas, con 300 personajes, tres décadas de acción y ningún protagonista claro, llevada a un film complejo pero entendible de más de dos horas), la fotografía (prodigio experimental de unión de formatos y técnicas que terminan por redondear la calculada y valiente puesta en escena de Meirelles), el montaje (que juega con las tres partes en que se divide el film y las tres décadas de acción para ir variando el ritmo, la in-tensidad y la anarquía narrativa hasta alcanzar cotas de paroxismo y brillantez extraordinarias en el lenguaje fílmico) y los intérpretes (un nutrido reparto de 100 niños de la calle que otorgan la verdad, la intensidad y el realismo más emocionante a todo este conjunto).

Pero que nadie se piense que estamos ante un prodigio técnico, un trabajo colosal y una espe-ranzadora capacidad de experimentar que sólo cubre una gran nada, porque más bien nos encon-tramos ante todo lo contrario. El film se rodea de toda esta brillantez técnica para contar una historia cruda, terrible y de un horror tan diario y terrenal, como al mismo tiempo in-creíble y lejano para la mayor parte de los espectadores. Un western sangriento, violento, brutal y desgarrador, en donde una serie de niños y jóvenes sesgan vidas y luchan por sobrevivir en medio de la muerte más auténtica, en el fango de las favelas brasileñas, de una Ciudad de Dios sin ley y sin orden, donde las pistolas mandan y la droga y el control que ejercen los “jefes” en la calle es palabra de Dios. Sin escapatoria, sin esperanza, el protagonista (un joven poco dispuesto a la violencia, con as-piraciones artísticas) habrá de sobrevivir al desarrollo de ese mundo durante treinta años, a los amigos y enemigos que desaparecen, a los que permanecen y a una constante: ser dejados de la mano de gobiernos, e instituciones, con-denados a ser un infierno en la tierra, una tierra de auténtica anarquía con su particular apartheid.

Daría para un largo análisis este milagro fílmico, esta gota de esperanza en un océano de generalizada inanidad narrativa y de nulo riesgo experimentador, que encuentra aquí una cima histórica, más conseguida aun al venir en la forma de una película con un importante nivel de producción, destinada a llegar al co-razón, la cabeza y los sentidos de todos los espectadores. Una cita artística inapelable.
